As the only person living in Wales on the British and Commonwealth Civil List I would like to thank the United Nations for its concern about the Welsh Language. In the bardic tradition I offer the United Nations a sample of our ancient literary tradition. First an englyn by Dafydd ap Gwilym in the fourteenth century and an englyn to March which I completed today under my Bardic name Glyn Eithrym. This is also my name in Burke’s Peerage and Gentry. The tradition is very rich and precious, among the most ancient in all Europe.

from “Dychan Rys Meigen” by Dafydd an Gwilym (about 1320 to about 1380)

Cau rheidus bwystus bostiai – a^’i dafod O Deifi hyd Fenai; Cor oediog, neb nis credai, Cwr adain, heb nain, heb nai.

Mawrth (Glyn Eithrym, 21st century)

Mae rhuthr y Mawrth oer – yn gyllell, Yn gell llymder i’r lloer; Blas yr eira, ias ei boer, A maes sur y mis iasoer.

Prof. Myron Wyn Evans of Glyn Eithrym
