The top photograph is one I took of members of the lower sixth form of Pontardawe Grammar School in 1967, when I was 17. I recognize Leighton Carter and Lyn Evans, both of Cwmgors, nearest the camera. This common room consisted of a battered attic and an ancient table, on which a game of cards was being played and shelves for a few books. Mary Hopkins attended this lower sixth for a few months and sang and played the guitar in this same common room. There is a youtube of her when she was a little older at about 19, singing her hit “Those were the Days”. That still attracts a huge number of views even now, forty years later. The second is my official mugshot as a first year undergraduate in the department of physics in the then UCW Aberystwyth, in October 1968 when I was 18.
